Seriously Jim,
I clean all my gear after every trip, usually the day after the fishing. A line winder helps wipe crud off the line. I use a tooth brush and damp cloth to clean the rod. Same with the reel, wipe all dust off of it, check for needed further maintenance and problems not noticed lst time. I’m pretty serious about this.
