It’s official: West Fork reopens on weekends only through 2023

I’m sure this wonderful sign, which I shot right before the Bobcat Fire in September, 2020, is long gone. I can’t quite bear to return to my beloved West Fork, but if you go, please send pics for me to post. I heard it is very muddy and not good fishing. (Credit: Jim Burns)

UPDATE: The bike path will remain closed to the public on weekdays through December, 2023.

ARCADIA, Calif.— One of Angeles National Forest’s roads in the Upper San Gabriel River watershed—West Fork Road or National Forest System Road No. 2N25—will be temporarily closed to all recreationists on weekdays only (except on Federal holidays) for public safety from April 1 through Dec. 1 in both 2022 and 2023. This road closure is requested by Los Angeles County Public Works for sediment removal operations.

The goal is to remove up to 2 million cubic yards of sediment that has accumulated in the Cogswell Reservoir because of the Station Fire of 2009 and the Bobcat Fire of 2020. (Sediment has accumulated because fire burns away vegetation and leaves little to hold soil and rocks in place.)

Project work includes unclogging inlets/outlets and excavating and transporting sediment from the reservoir via heavy construction equipment to the adjacent sediment placement site. This sediment removal work provides vital flood control capacity to protect downstream communities.

Angeles National Forest remains closed through Oct. 8

Due to extreme fire conditions, the Angeles National Forest, along with six other forests in California, will remain closed through Thursday, Oct. 8. This is because of a combination of extreme heat, dry conditions, significant wind events and firefighting resources that are stretched to the limit, the U.S. Forest Service said. The Bobcat Fire has burned for 26 days and is about 63 percent contained after tearing through almost 155,000 acres. Nine hundred ninety two personnel continue to fight the conflagration. Not a big ‘ask’ from Angeles National Forest

moek says:

your asking the wrong people. forest ranger patrick everyday does his part to clean the park . problem is the people are animals with no courtesy. not enough of authority up there its sad i know. but people need to take reposnisbility.

Pistoff Fly Fisherman says:

I was just there today. It looks as if there was an air drop of trash all along the west fork of the San Gabriel River. I’d love to say that it’s just an issue of blocked and/or overflowing dumpsters, but it’s clear there wasn’t even an attempt to get the trash to a receptacle in most cases. I could’ve filled a couple dumpsters just within the first mile of the footbridge – and that doesn’t include what was strewn all around the dumpsters. Between the litter and the tagging (in broad daylight!), I wish they’d stand watch and ticket the living piss out of these jerks. We could wipe out the state deficit with one June weekend.
